What is IEQ Anyway? ... Indoor Environmental Quality
According to National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, IEQ "simply refers to the quality of the air in an office or other building environment."
The Whole Building Design Guide states that IEQ "encompasses indoor air quality (IAQ), which focuses on airborne contaminants, as well as other health, safety, and comfort issues ..."
In short, IEQ or Indoor Environmental Quality refers to the cleanliness, health and comfort offered by the environment inside a building, whether we're talking about your home or workplace.
Cubix IEQ offers a free IEQ Audit - we can profile the contaminants present in your home or office building and develop a remediation program.
"Sick Building Syndrome" is a term you may have heard used by workers who claim that their health problems can be attributed to their employer's building. This can be a valid complaint when employees are subjected to an indoor environment that contains contaminants such as allergens and microorganisms, which either originate within the building or are drawn in from outdoors. IEQ is not only of concern in commercial buildings, but is also a priority in the home where pet dander, dust mites and other pests can add to the problem.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we Americans spend 90% of our time indoors. This emphasizes the importance of being able to breathe clean, contaminant-free air at home and during our work day.
At Cubix IEQ, we focus on helping our customers create a healthy, clean, "green" space that's ideal for work, sleep and family time.
When disaster strikes, we're there to help you return your building to its original condition and get on with living.
IEQ Means "Green"
Environmentalism isn't just for hippies these days. In recent years, with concerns about global warming bringing these issues to the forefront, we've witnessed a rebirth in the concern about climate change. In 2007, we witnessed one of the largest grassroots environmentalism demonstrations in years - Step It Up 2007 - with rallies in over 1,400 communities in all 50 states. Clearly this movement is here to stay.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has become a leader in "green" or sustainable building practices by creating certification standards for all types of structures - commercial, residential... even schools. In each standard, issues related to Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) make up an entire category. In fact, it's difficult to achieve the USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for your building without a focus on IEQ.
What kind of IEQ does a "green" building have?
- proper ventilation
- regular inspection of the HVAC system
- complete control of tobacco smoke
- policies and air handling systems that prevent the exposure of occupants to hazardous chemicals and contaminants - biological or particulate
- an emphasis on mold and mildew prevention
